Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) – French political thinker and historian.
“Upon my arrival in the United States, the religious aspect of the country was the first thing that struck my attention, and the longer I stayed there the more did I perceive the great political consequences resulting from this state of things, to which I was unaccustomed.”
Monsieur de Tocqueville toured the United states from 1831 to 1832. His book “Democracy in America” should be required reading for every high school senior. His astute and prescient observations of America life at the time and its grand “middling” success, as opposed to Europe’s fading aristocratic order, are profound and enlightening. kqd
