“Over my slumbers your loving watch keep. Rock me to sleep, mother, rock me to sleep!”
This lovely verse is from the poem, “Rock Me to Sleep” , which was first published in 1860. It was written for both pre-teens and mothers everywhere. There was, for many years, a controversy over the authorship of this poem. In 1866, when it was republished by Elizabeth Akers along with other of her writings , Alexander M. W. Ball of New Jersey claimed that he wrote the poem. Considering Ms. Allen was divorced in 1854, married three times and remained childless, his assertion may not have been baseless. kqd
